Solar vs Wired Garden Lighting: Which Is Worth It?

The short answer

For a permanent, reliable scheme, wired low-voltage lighting wins comfortably - brighter, consistent, and far longer-lasting. Solar has its place for temporary, decorative or genuinely hard-to-wire spots, but it's dimmer, fades in winter exactly when you need it most, and the batteries wear out in a few years. They're really tools for different jobs.

Solar garden lighting is cheap, easy, and everywhere - so it's a fair question why anyone wires lights in at all. The honest answer is that they solve different problems, and knowing which you've got saves disappointment.

Where solar genuinely makes sense

Solar isn't useless - it's just often used for the wrong job. It's a sound choice for: a remote corner with no realistic route for cable; temporary or seasonal decoration; a rented home where you can't install anything permanent; or simply marking a path cheaply where quality of light doesn't much matter. For those, solar's zero running cost and no-wiring simplicity are real advantages.

Where solar disappoints

  • Brightness: a small panel and battery can only store so much, so output is modest and often can't achieve proper uplighting or feature effects.
  • Winter performance: in the UK, short overcast December days barely charge the battery - so the light fades right when evenings are longest and you'd use it most.
  • Consistency: brightness tails off through the night as the battery drains, and varies with how sunny the day was.
  • Lifespan: the rechargeable batteries typically degrade within two to three years, after which run-time drops noticeably.

What wired low-voltage gives you

A wired 12V system draws steady power, so it's as bright on a wet January evening as a clear June one, holds that brightness all night, and supports proper design techniques - uplighting, moonlighting, grazing - that solar simply can't power. Good LED fittings run for many years, and the whole scheme can be dimmed and zoned. The trade-offs are the upfront installation and the cabling - which, done well, is invisible (see our guide to hiding cables).

The coastal factor

On exposed Eastbourne seafront and Sovereign Harbour plots, cheap solar fittings corrode fast in salt air - you'll be replacing them often, which erases the cost saving. A sensible way to think about it

If the lighting is part of how you want your garden to look and feel every evening, wire it. If it's a bit of cheap seasonal sparkle or a spot you truly can't reach with cable, solar is fine for what it is. Problems only arise when someone buys solar expecting wired-quality results - that's a mismatch of expectations, not a fault in either technology.
