12V vs Mains Garden Lighting: Which Is Right for Your Eastbourne Garden?

For most gardens, 12V low-voltage lighting is the better choice — it's safe to run near planting and water, easy to adjust as a garden matures, and usually installs without armoured cabling. Mains lighting earns its place where you need higher output, such as some architectural facade lighting or bright security floodlights. What each one actually is

12V low-voltage lighting runs your mains supply through a transformer that steps it down to 12 volts. The cabling threaded through your borders and buried along paths carries only that low voltage — which is why it's the standard for garden lighting. Mains lighting runs fittings directly on the 230V supply, which means proper regulated installation and, for buried runs, armoured cable.

Safety — the honest bit

This is where 12V wins clearly for garden use. A spike light tucked into a damp border, cabling crossing a lawn, fittings near a pond — at 12V, that environment is far more forgiving than mains cable would be. The transformer still connects to a mains supply, and that connection should be made to the relevant regulations, but the network running around your garden stays low-voltage. For planting-led schemes, that safety margin is exactly why the industry defaults to 12V.

Cost

12V generally costs less to install because it avoids armoured cabling and the associated groundwork. Mains points cost more each, which is one reason we reserve them for the fittings that genuinely need the output. When we'd choose each

  • Choose 12V for tree uplighting, borders, path and step lighting, feature and water lighting — the bulk of a typical garden scheme.
  • Choose mains for bright PIR security lighting, large facade wall-washing, or permanent architectural fittings mounted on the house.
  • Use both when a garden needs subtle planting lighting and a bright, dependable security light over the drive — which is common.
