How to Hide Garden Lighting Cables: A Practical Guide
Route cable along border edges and fence lines where planting hides it, under mulch or gravel, or buried in a shallow trench across lawns and paths. For 12V low-voltage, aim for at least 150mm depth where a spade or mower might reach. Mains cable is a different matter - strict regulations, qualified electrician only.
Nothing undoes a good lighting scheme faster than visible cable looping across a border. Concealing it well is partly about routing and partly about depth - and the right approach depends on whether you're running low-voltage or mains.
Route before you dig
The neatest cable is the cable you never had to bury deep, because you routed it somewhere naturally hidden. Before lifting a spade, plan runs that follow:
- The base of borders and beds - planting canopy hides cable pinned low against the soil.
- Fence and wall lines - run cable tight along the bottom of a boundary where nothing disturbs it.
- Under gravel, bark or mulch - decorative ground cover conceals cable and is easy to lift if you need access later.
- Existing edges - the join between lawn and path, or path and border, is a natural channel.
Burial depth that actually protects the cable
For 12V low-voltage lighting there's no legally mandated depth, but the practical enemy is future you - with a spade, a fork, or a new plant. Around 150mm is a sensible minimum in borders; go deeper under lawns, where aeration and mowing edges bite, and anywhere you might plant. A run of cable warning tape laid a few centimetres above the cable is cheap insurance: you'll hit the tape before the spade hits the cable.
Protecting cable through vulnerable spots
Where cable crosses somewhere it can't be buried deep - under a path, across a driveway, through a spot you'll dig regularly - run it inside protective conduit. It stops a spade or root from crushing the cable and makes it far easier to pull through a replacement later without re-trenching.
Important: this covers general good practice for low-voltage systems. Any mains-voltage outdoor wiring must be installed by a qualified electrician in line with the wiring regulations - it is not a DIY task.
The connection points matter as much as the cable
Buried cable is only as good as its joints. Every connection needs to be properly waterproof - resin-filled or purpose-made IP-rated connectors, not tape and hope. A poorly sealed joint underground is the single most common cause of a garden lighting fault a year or two down the line, and it's miserable to trace once everything's grown over. When to hand it over
A modest 12V scheme with careful waterproofing is within reach of a confident DIYer. It's worth calling in a professional when the run involves mains voltage, crossing hard landscaping, a large multi-zone layout, or an established garden where trenching risks damaging roots and irrigation - the kind of job where getting the routing wrong means digging it all up again.
