How Many Lumens Do You Need for Garden Lighting?

The short answer

Far fewer than most people think. As a rough guide: path lights 20-100 lumens, uplights on shrubs and small trees 100-300 lumens, and large feature trees or facades 300-700 lumens. Garden lighting works through contrast, not brightness - flooding a garden with high-lumen fittings destroys the effect you're paying for.

Lumens measure how much light a fitting actually puts out. It's the number that matters for garden lighting, and it's the one most DIY buyers get wrong - usually by buying far too bright. Here's how to judge it properly.

Why brighter is the classic mistake

Indoors, we light for tasks: reading, cooking, working. Outdoors after dark, the job is the opposite - you're creating atmosphere, picking out a few things worth looking at, and letting everything else fall into shadow. That contrast between lit and unlit is what makes a garden look considered rather than like a floodlit car park. Crank every fitting up to maximum lumens and you flatten all of that into a bright, shadowless wash. Restraint is the whole skill.

Rough lumen guide by fitting type

  • Path & spread lights (20-100 lm): just enough to mark a route and show a step edge. More than this and they glare in the eyeline as you walk.
  • Border & shrub uplights (100-200 lm): enough to model a plant's form without blowing it out.
  • Small tree uplights (200-300 lm): lifts a small ornamental tree cleanly against the dark.
  • Large feature trees (300-700 lm): a mature oak or tall conifer needs more punch to reach the canopy - the one place higher output earns its place.
  • Facade & wall-wash (200-500 lm): depends on the surface; pale render needs less than dark brick or flint.

Lumens, not watts

If you're shopping and a fitting is sold on wattage alone, look for the lumen figure instead. Wattage tells you what the light costs to run, not how bright it is. Old halogen lamps burned a lot of watts for their brightness, so the two numbers roughly tracked - but LEDs produce far more light per watt, so a 4W LED can match a 35W halogen. For brightness, lumens is the only number that means anything.

Beam angle matters as much as lumens

Two fittings with identical lumens can look completely different depending on beam angle. A narrow beam concentrates the same light into a tight, dramatic column up a tree trunk; a wide beam spreads it into a soft wash. This is why a lumen figure alone never tells the whole story - placement and optics do as much work as raw output, which is the part that's hard to get right from a spec sheet alone.

The coastal angle
