The short answer

Yes, it's safe to light a pond or water feature, done correctly: 12V low-voltage fittings rated IP68 if submerged (or IP65+ at the water's edge), protected by an RCD, installed by someone competent in outdoor electrical work. The combination of these three things is what makes it safe — skipping any one of them is where problems happen.

Water and electricity make people (rightly) cautious, and that caution is exactly why this is worth explaining properly rather than just saying "yes it's fine." Here's what a correctly done installation actually involves.

Why this matters

Faulty or incorrectly rated electrical equipment near water is a genuine safety hazard. This is not a DIY-from-a-video-tutorial job — a proper installation by someone competent in outdoor electrical work, using correctly rated components, is essential.

IP ratings — the number that actually matters

The "IP" rating tells you how well a fitting is sealed against dust and water. For pond lighting:

  • IP68 — required for any fitting that's actually submerged. This is the rating for fully underwater use.
  • IP65 or higher — the minimum for fittings positioned at the water's edge or in a splash zone, even if not submerged.
  • Anything lower — not appropriate anywhere near a pond or water feature, full stop.

Why 12V is standard near water

Just as with garden borders, 12V low-voltage is the standard choice around water because the consequences of a fault are far less severe than at mains voltage. The transformer stepping mains down to 12V should be positioned away from the water itself, with only the low-voltage cabling running to the pond.

RCD protection is non-negotiable

An RCD (residual current device) cuts power almost instantly if it detects current leaking to earth — exactly the kind of fault that could occur near water. This applies whether the lighting itself is 12V or mains, and it's not an optional extra; it's a basic safety requirement for any outdoor electrical circuit, especially one near water.

What a proper installation looks like

  • Submersible fittings rated IP68, designed specifically for underwater use — not a general outdoor fitting pushed into the water.
  • Cable routed to avoid being submerged unnecessarily, with waterproof connectors at any joint.
  • A transformer sited away from the water, in a dry, ventilated position.
  • RCD protection on the circuit.
  • Regular visual checks for damaged cable or a cracked fitting — a compromised seal is the point at which a fitting stops being safe.
